Foundation Skateboards Co.

Foundation Skateboards is one of the most authentic, enduring, and respected brands in the history of American hardcore skateboarding. Founded by the legendary Tod Swank in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Foundation remains one of the most genuine and underground entities the skate world has ever seen.

We’re talking about a brand that has never chased fleeting fads or commercial trends, but has built its reputation through raw videos, aggressive street skating, powerhouse teams, and a philosophy as simple as it is clear: “Only Skateboarding.”

Foundation is pure skateboarding attitude. Boards built for serious skating, hardcore teams, iconic videos, and a street culture that continues to influence generations of skaters around the world to this day.

Foundation Skateboards: The Birth of the Brand

The Foundation Skateboards brand was officially founded in 1989 by Tod Swank, one of the most respected skaters on the American scene in the 1980s. Swank, with initial support from Steve Rocco and World Industries, decided to launch a company that would represent a more authentic, technical, and street-oriented vision of skateboarding.

From its earliest years, Foundation began to build a very strong identity of its own. The first boards were well-received by the American underground scene, while the team slowly took shape around the figure of Tod Swank.

In 1990, the brand’s first official video, titled “Glam Boys on Wheels,” was released. A video that was still very raw and experimental, but extremely important because it documents the actual birth of Foundation Skateboards and showcases the company’s first riders as they began to define the brand’s style.

Although the editing was still chaotic and spontaneous, the video already perfectly conveyed the hardcore, anti-commercial attitude that would accompany Foundation throughout its history.

The Moon & Star brand and the evolution of street skating

With its second video, “The Magic F,” Foundation began seriously building one of the strongest teams on the American scene of the early ’90s. Legendary riders like Tony Briseno, Joshua Beagle, Jason Rotemeier, and Billy Bakker joined the roster.

During those years, street skating was changing radically. Between 1990 and 1992, we witnessed one of the most important evolutions in the history of modern skateboarding. Boards began to feature more pronounced noses, more technical shapes, and different dimensions compared to the boards of the 1980s. Wheels also became smaller and faster, allowing for much more technical and aggressive skateboarding.

Tod Swank experienced this transformation firsthand and immediately understood that Foundation had to evolve alongside modern street skating. The brand thus began to take on an even more technical, fast, and street-oriented identity.

It was during these years that the famous Moon & Star logo and Foundation’s iconic “F” became absolute symbols of American underground skateboarding culture.

From World Industries to the Birth of Tum Yeto

One of the most important moments in Foundation’s history came when Tod Swank decided to leave World Industries distribution to move to San Diego and found Tum Yeto Distribution.

From that moment on, Foundation Skateboards definitively entered a new phase. The brand gained even greater creative freedom, and Tod Swank began building one of the most important skateboarding distributors in the U.S.

With the release of videos like “Cocktails” in 1992 and “Super Conductor Super Collider” in 1993, Foundation established itself as one of the strongest and most innovative companies in the United States.

In these videos, the technical level achieved by the team was impressive for the time. Ron Creager revolutionized the concept of switch skating, while riders like Heath Kirchart, Steve Olson, Frank Hirata, and Josh Beagle took street skating to entirely new levels.

Foundation is also the brand that introduced one of the most influential names in 1990s skateboarding: Steve Berra.

Foundation Skateboards and the videos that defined an era

Over the years, Foundation has produced over fifteen skate videos that have become true cult classics of hardcore skateboarding culture.

Videos like “Duty Now For The Future,” “Madness & Mayhem,” and above all the legendary “Cataclysmic Abyss” defined an entire generation of skaters who grew up with fast, aggressive, and totally street-oriented skateboarding.

Foundation has always stood out for its extremely raw and punk approach. No artificial setups, no overly polished imagery: just real skateboarding made up of difficult spots, fast lines, massive gaps, and hardcore attitude.

Over the years, the brand has continued to launch incredible riders like Ethan Fowler, Corey Duffel, Justin Strubing, Don Nguyen, and many other skaters who have become absolute icons of modern skateboarding.

Foundation Skateboards Today

Even today, Foundation Skateboards continues to represent one of the most authentic brands on the global scene. Tod Swank has always remained faithful to the brand’s original philosophy, keeping alive the “Only Skateboarding” spirit that made Foundation a legend.

The modern team includes powerhouse skaters like Cole Wilson, Dakota Servold, Nick Merlino, Ryan Spencer, Corey Glick, Aidan Campbell, Dylan Witkin, Joey Ragali, and the timeless Corey Duffel, who is still considered one of the most iconic and aggressive skaters of his generation.

Foundation continues to produce high-performance skateboard decks, clothing, and accessories while maintaining a strong and recognizable identity.

Even the brand’s historic logos, such as the famous Moon & Star and the iconic “F” Foundation, have become timeless symbols of global skate culture and remain among the most beloved designs among skaters to this day.

Tod Swank, “The Push,” and the Transworld Legend

One of the most iconic images linked to the history of Foundation and Tod Swank is undoubtedly the legendary photograph “The Push,” taken in 1986 by the legendary Transworld Skateboarding photographer J. Grant Brittain.

The story goes that Brittain was struck by the incredible light filtering through two highway overpasses near a spot where he often went for breakfast. He decided to capture a skater at that exact spot, making the most of that unique atmosphere.

The skater he chose was Tod Swank. That photograph immediately became legendary, evolving into one of the most iconic images in the history of global skateboarding.
