Blind Skaterboards

Blind Skateboards: One of the All-Time Legends of Street Skateboarding

Blind Skateboards is undoubtedly one of the most important and influential brands in the history of global skateboarding. When it comes to the evolution of street skating in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Blind is one of those brands that completely changed the way people viewed skateboarding.

The brand was officially founded in 1989 thanks to the creative genius of Mark Gonzales, one of the most revolutionary figures skateboarding has ever known. The name “Blind” was chosen almost as a provocation against Vision Skateboards, a massive brand at the time, and this alone speaks to the project’s rebellious and unconventional nature.

Mark Gonzales decided to build something totally different from the classic vert and transition brands that dominated the scene at the time. Blind quickly became synonymous with technical, creative, and aggressive street skating. The team’s style completely broke with the traditional norms of 1980s skateboarding and paved the way for a new generation of street skaters.

From the very beginning, the Blind team was simply sensational. Jason Lee left World Industries to join the crew, while Rudy Johnson and Guy Mariano left Powell Peralta to join Gonzales’ project. At that time, having names of this caliber on the team literally meant building a world-class skateboarding superteam.

Alongside them were Jordan Richter, Danny Way, and other riders who would leave a profound mark on the history of modern skateboarding. Danny Way would remain on the team for only a short time, but his presence already demonstrated the extremely high level Blind had reached in its early years.

The Era of Video Days and the Skateboarding Revolution

In 1991, Blind Skateboards released “Video Days,” arguably one of the most influential skate videos of all time. Filmed and edited by the legendary Spike Jonze, this video completely changed the language of skateboarding.

Even today, over thirty years later, Video Days is considered an absolute milestone. It wasn’t just a skate video: it was art, style, creativity, and pure skateboarding. The editing, the music, the street spots, and above all the team’s technical level were years ahead of almost everything else that existed at the time.

Guy Mariano, still very young, already displayed an incredible style and an extraordinary selection of tricks. Technical handrails, noseblunt slides, fast combo lines, wheelies, and impressive board control. Jason Lee, on the other hand, brought a fluid, powerful, and creative style of skateboarding that would influence thousands of skaters in the years to come.

At that moment, Blind represented the future of street skateboarding. The brand managed to blend technique, style, speed, and personality in a completely new way. Many tricks that are considered standard today were practically revolutionary back then.

From “Tim and Henry’s Pack of Lies” to the Birth of the Modern Scene

In 1993, Blind continued its expansion and further strengthened its team by adding riders like Tim Gavin, Brian Lotti, Jeron Wilson, and Henry Sanchez. All skaters who would play a massive role in the development of technical street skating in the 1990s.

During the same period, the brand produced its second major video project: “Tim and Henry’s Pack of Lies.” Although for many it doesn’t reach the historic level of “Video Days,” it remains a fundamental video for understanding the evolution of skateboarding during those years.

Henry Sanchez and Tim Gavin brought a lightning-fast, technical, and super-stylish style of skateboarding, featuring switch stances, powerful lines, and tricks that were extremely modern for the time. Brian Lotti, on the other hand, added his elegant and creative style, quickly becoming one of the most appreciated skaters on the scene.

Mike Ternasky, the legendary producer of Plan B videos, stated in an interview that Tim Gavin and Henry Sanchez’s parts were among the best in the project. This highlights just how devastating the Blind team’s technical level still was during those years.

In 1994, legend Ronnie Creager joined the team, leaving Foundation Skateboards to become part of the Blind family. At the same time, however, major changes began to take place in the skate scene. Guy Mariano, Rudy Johnson, Jeron Wilson, and Tim Gavin left Blind to help launch Girl Skateboards, another brand destined to change the history of skateboarding.

Jason Lee also left Blind to found Stereo Skateboards alongside Chris “Dune” Pastras. Skateboarding was entering a new era, and Blind had played a central role in this transformation.

Blind Skateboards in the New Millennium

In the years that followed, Bill Weiss completely rebuilt the Blind Skateboards team, while keeping the brand’s historic identity alive. Riders such as Ronnie Creager, Kris Markovich, Corey Sheppard, Grant Patterson, and Denny Cerezini joined the team.

In 2005, Blind released the video “What If?”, officially marking a new phase for the brand. The video showcased a more modern, technical, and powerful style of skateboarding, yet remained true to the original Blind spirit.

Throughout the 2010s, the brand continued to evolve by adding riders such as TJ Rogers, Kevin Romar, Felipe Ortiz, Morgan Smith, and especially Cody McEntire, one of the most iconic skaters of the new Blind generation.

Cody McEntire stated on multiple occasions that turning pro for Blind Skateboards had always been one of his biggest dreams. This demonstrates just how much the brand has continued to maintain a legendary aura even for new generations of skateboarders.

During that period, Blind also reintroduced many of its iconic 90s graphics, reissuing classic boards and bringing back the classic logo that had made the brand famous worldwide. Thus, 90s nostalgia meets the modern skate scene.

Blind Skateboards Today: Between Tradition and Innovation

Even today, Blind Skateboards remains one of the most recognizable and respected brands in the global skateboarding scene.
